Jesus parable about the tax collector and the Pharisee (Luke 18:9-14)and their different approaches to prayer in the Temple gives us pause in how we approach God and how we are encouraged to be faithful but not pious. Using the old gospel hymn, “Standin’ in the need of prayer,” the Rector talks about how each of us needs to pray for our sins and how we do not stand above others in our piety. Each of us is dependent on God and we are both the tax collector and the Pharisee at different times.
